Boiling Point

Eco Ltd are editors and publishers of the journal ‘Boiling Point’, a household energy magazine that provides free and accessible information to practitioners, researchers and users, reaching over 2000 addresses and an estimated readership of 5 times this number worldwide. The journal reflects much of what Eco Ltd is about, aiming to improve the quality of life for poor communities living in the developing world by dealing with the various technical, social, financial and environmental issues that all contribute to improved access to energy services.

Having first been created by Practical Action in 1982, Eco Ltd have managed the journal for the past four years and are continuing to innovate both content and format, with a now expanded readership and full integration into the HEDON Household Energy Network website (including back issues). Eco also sponsor the journal along with Practical Action, GTZ and guest sponsors such as ENERGIA.

By building on Eco’s expertise and global network of contacts we have now firmly established Boiling Point as the premier journal for household energy. The print version of Boiling Point 57 focusing on Household Dynamics, has just been distributed by direct mail and via sponsors to all corners of the globe and a digital version was sent to over 350 online subscribers. In designing and implementing household energy projects, it is easy to assume that because an intervention is affordable and has been technically proven to yield benefits, it will be accepted by (target) beneficiaries. Experience has shown however that there are also other factors that affect household energy and the responses of households to interventions. These factors include gender, migration, income and livelihood security, cultural perceptions, and livelihood strategies, which together can be described as Household Dynamics. In this edition of Boiling Point we look at how some of these factors can shape household energy interventions and responses.

All Boiling Point articles are available as web pages and can be viewed now as downloadable pdf’s
